Combat Operations Under Cold
War-time Contingencies - Infiltration and
patrol. - Locate and silence enemy artillery objective - Detection and tracking, Compass Navigation
SCENARIO: In "About Face", Col. David
Hackworth's autobiography, Col. Hackworth describes his first battle
experience in TRUST - Triest United States Troops as part of the 351st
Regimental Combat Team. This was the hot beginning of the Cold War. The Reds were grabbing what they
could for their future Empire. Since Tito's Partisans had
liberated the Italian City of Trieste in 1945 they felt it was now a permanent
addition to the Eastern Block. President Harry Truman and the West though
otherwise
and sent TRUST - Triest
United States Troops as part of the 351st Regimental Combat Team to re-liberate
the Tieste region.
To quote Col. Hackworth..."In the rugged mountains
surrounding Trieste, TRUST Troopers dodged bullets, walked through minefields
and countered Yugoslavian ambushes. Patrols clashed, bullets sang, booby traps
exploded and the call of "Medic" sounded in the hills overlooking the strategic
port city."
With this
backdrop, the Red forces continue to be locked in combat with their Italian
cousins to the south. Both forces, owing to the difficult mountain terrain,
operate almost exclusively in small infantry units; combat engagements and
probing actions along ill defined Yugo-Italian border In this forested
landscape, small yet highly skilled infantry teams move silently through the
woods and over and around rocky outcrops to harass their enemy, spring ambushes,
lob mortar rounds, inflicting whatever damage they can against their soon to be
long-term adversaries.
