CIMMERIAN AFTER
ACTION REPORT - OP: FREEDOM STRIKE - MISSION COMPLETE: 17 SEP
05 -
*** AAR IN PROGRESS ***
This month's operation was an intense
Saturday combat re-enactment, based on a modern-day scenario in
Central Europe. Thank you all for attending and help making it another
outstanding Cimmerian Operation!
Combat Operations: - Reconnaissance and Combat Patrol - Multiple objectives - ID and
Elimination of specific operators in the field
OPCOM: Capt. Fisher
AO: WOODCHUK
MISSION
SCENARIO:
Boznia, former
Yugoslavia ...
During the Balkans war there were Russian advisors (mercs)
to Serb forces. Therewas indication that a Ukrainian PVO Strany (Air Defence
component) officer assisted Bosnian Serb forces in shooting down 2 German Av-8B
harriers in the summer of 1995 in Eastern Bosnia. GSG9 team was dispatched to
the area to investigate and/or eliminate whether there were Russian/Ukrainian
irregulars operating in the area. On Mt. Majevica, while historical details are
sketchy, the German GSG had eliminated a "foreign operated antiaircraft
installation." This was a "black bag" job because Ukrainian forces were a part
of UNPROFOR in Sarajevo.
About
two days afterwards, Ukrainians reported that one of their colonels
"Chekanin" and his staff were shot on a checkpoint manned by the Serbs, interestingly all of the staff was from the
PVO (AA) component of the Ukrainian 2nd Mechanized Batt. stationed in
Sarajevo.
This event is historically significant for two reasons a)
it got Ukrainians out of the market for selling know-how to Serbs b) signified
first
Bundeswehr's
ground action against another European country since the days of
The Vermacht - again, the German aircraft that were brought down, so the
Germans exacted punitive action.
